Like almost every computer program in existence, Quake III Arena contains its fair share of easter eggs, little ‘surprises’ included by the people at id Software. It’s good fun to wander round and try to find them yourself, but if you can’t, I’ve compiled a list of them and how to find them. Be warned – this page contains lots and lots of spoilers!
Still here? Good. I’ve managed to find five easter eggs in Quake 3 so far – if you find any more, mail us so we can add them here.

Okay, first up is Eric Webb’s head – Eric is currently an intern with id Software. If you go to map Q3DM15, jump down to the path above the lava, there are two ways out – the teleport, and a path to a room. Go to that room, and look in the left corner by the far doorway. Zoom in and watch the animation…

For the next two, fire up Q3DM19. Either load it in multiplayer mode or do a /devmap – you need either the flight powerup, or noclip to find these. The first one is under the level – some weird logo which seems to be the dust puppy from www.userfriendly.org.

For the other, move to the shotgun nearest to the flight powerup. You see that floating platform? Go behind it, and take a look. That looks very much like Old Man Murray. You might have to turn your brightness levels up a bit in order to see it – I did!

Right. This egg has made it into my books as “the-most-annoying-easter-egg-in-Q3A”. Why? It turned up after I’d submitted this page to PQ, thats why! To find it, go to Q3DM16, and drop off the edge. Look up as you do so, and whats that underneath the main platform? Noclip up to it and take a closer look if you want, but it’s the dust puppy again.

Okay, last one. This one just keeps on cropping up in id games – yup, the good ‘ol Dopefish! Go to map Q3DM11, and find the teleporter opposite the shotgun. Turn around 180 degrees, and there is a section of wall with no striplight under it. Walk up to it, and lo! It be a dopefish!
Bot Chat
Finally, the bot chat responses. There are lots and lots and lots and lots of these, far too many to list here. Just fire up a level and add some bots, and talk to them! It might take a few tries to get them to talk after you install the point release – it seems id changed the bot code so they treat the arena like an arena, not an IRC channel. One example:
If you tell the bots that they bore you, that apparently gets them going as well.
There’s more where these came from, and the bot responses are many. Play around with them a bit
