Aside from the standard machine gun you’re issued at the beginning of the game and the gauntlet that you carry with you at all times, there are a variety of other weapons scattered around the map. In order to completely own your opponents, you’re going to need to grab these weapons and get proficient in their use! Here’s a rundown of what’s available and what their respective ammo boxes look like.

The Gauntlet: When you’re out of guns and ammo, the gauntlet is what you’ll end up with. You’ll need to be as close as possible to your opponent as this is a very close range melee weapon, and you’ll have to get in at least three hits to take them out. Pray, baby…pray hard that you’ll never have to resort to these. |

Machine Gun: Better than the gauntlets, but still not the most desirable or effective weapon you can find. This is your default weapon; and although you can definitely frag some ass with this gun, you need to be fairly close to bring someone down with it. You don’t start out with a whole lot of ammo for the Machine Gun, so don’t waste those rounds! |
Shotgun: Complete with lasersight, the shotgun is a good close-range weapon. From a distance, it won’t do you much good, but a well-placed shot right up against your opponent’s chest will send them right into the hereafter. |
Grenade Launcher: This weapon works well for laying down a carpet of nasty little surprises for people who may be trailing you, or for a rain of exploding death from a high place in the map.
Rocket Launcher: The Rocket Launcher is easily one of the most popular weapons in the game, and is also a very formidable death-bringer. This is a medium to long range weapon which requires a bit of skill in the aiming department. Always aim for your opponent’s feet for maximum splash damage, and never, EVER fire at anything in close proximity to yourself…especially a wall! |
Plasma Gun: The Plasma Gun is a new weapon in the medium to long range category. It shoots pulse-streams of radioactive goo at your opponents, which in turn, melts them off the map. |
Railgun: The weapon of choice for those with careful aim and/or a good connection. This weapon require some precise targeting as it’s instantaneous and a pencil-point weapon. There’s also a longer delay between shots than with other weapons. But if you can master the rail, you can dominate the game! |
Lightning Gun: An old favorite brought back from the first Quake! This gun will crackle with lightning as you fry your enemy with pure electricity. If your aim is good, you can generally kill your opponent pretty quickly. The key to this weapon is to strafe while keeping it trained on your target. |
The BFG: We probably don’t have to tell you what the acronym for this weapon stands for. Unlike it’s Quake 2 counterpart, the BFG fires fast and powerful globs of green death at your target. It’s generally considered to be the most powerful weapon in the game. |
